In a desperate movement from the government to keep the Swine Flu at bay, a vaccine may be made available to the higher risk groups to minimize casualties.

A paediatrics professor at the University of Bristol who will be conducting some testings on the pandemic vaccine said:

“There will be a period where a risk judgement will have to be made. It will depend if there is an increase in the number of cases and deaths. Children are potent spreaders [of the virus] – they are now seen as the engine of the epidemic. We are dealing with information as it comes in – we could be dealing with a far worse epidemic, and we need to act sooner rather than later.”

This comes after reports of the two latest deaths caused by the Pandemic Swine Flu virus H1N1, a six month old baby and a 39 pregnant woman who had to go under a premature cesarean operation in order to save her baby that is currently struggling to survive.

So far the Swine Flu pandemic has claimed 29 lives in Britain, and 55,000 more cases have been confirmed during the past week, 50% more than the previous week.

The Government has ordered in advance up to 132 million doses of this vaccine from a couple of manufacturers, GlaxoSmithKline and Baxter who are two of the most important labs in the world. These manufacturers claimed that they have tested and licensed in advance three  vaccines in order to be ready for a possible pandemic.

A representative for the EMEA (European Medicines Evaluation Agency) announced that the first samples of the fully functional pandemic vaccine were expected  to arrive by the end of July and athe should be approved within the next five days. Some trials involving around 400 patients shall be conducted, but before the results came in the vaccine would be made available for use by the British NHS.

“What the manufacturers will be submitting will not have any clinical trial data. We expect the interim adult data from September and the first paediatric data from October onwards,

According to this spokeperson.

A spokesperson from the  British Department of Health said :

“The UK has one of the most successful immunisation programmes in the world.

“Appropriate trials to assess safety and the immune responses have been carried out on vaccines very similar to the swine flu vaccine. The vaccines have been shown to have a good safety profile. More than 40,000 doses of the vaccines which the swine flu vaccines are based on have been given without any safety concerns.”

Fears of the Pandemic causing a massive  amount of deaths surpass the fear of possible side effects, according to Doctors, the process of developing a vaccine for the Swine Flu  is purer than before and vaccines cause less side effects, so releasing the vaccine before it’s completely tested should not be unsafe.

Meanwhile Tamiflu and Relenza continue to be the only medicines capable of fighting the virus in people already infected with the Swine Flu.

The official toll of Swine Flu cases has reached 29 in the UK (26 in England and 3 in Scotland), there were 55,000 new cases of swine flu last week.

Official cases of swine flu rise everyday and according to Britain’s Chief Medical Officer who says that in the worst case scenarion there could be up to 65,000 deaths caused by the Swine Flu, with a minimum of 3,100 cases.

55,000 new cases where reported last week, 50% more than the previous one, as the virus travels fast across the UK, and affects more and more people, specially those under the age of 14 or over 65.

There has been some turmoil in the UK when GP released a statement saying that they were receiving mixed messages on whether to give a prescription of Tamiflu to Swine Flu suspects or only to the most severe cases.

Apparently there was a discrepancy between a message on the NHS Direct website that appears to indicate all those with confirmed swine flu will receive Tamiflu that would help diminish the virus’s severity, and contradictive advice that came from the Royal College saying doctors should use their discretion.
